LATE SPRING 2011

We had no idea if the heucheras in the new pond area would survive the low winter temperatures but apart from 2 or 3 that had to be re-potted and returned to the plant shelves, there were no casualties and by May the area was looking good.

We were pleased with the results in the pond area. Two more of the logs were hollowed out to make planters for bedding plants that were added at the end of May. By then the hostas were all doing well. There haven't been as many slugs about this year - I think they like young hollyhocks and runner beans more so they stay near the greenhouse.

Last year I took seeds from the candelabra primulas, and most of them grew so were planted out giving a good display.

After the long, hard winter it was great to see the garden filling with colour in spring and we had plenty to look at from the conservatory.

Unfortunately though, while we were away, the three fish that had survived the big freeze, had disappeared, amidst reports of a both a cat sitting by the pond and a heron circling above the houses, so something had a small feast.
