Spring 2007

March and April

The garden looks really bare in March although the shrubs are still reliable for colour

In order to brighten the area near the house we have pots of bulbs

Following a 'Gardeners  World' programme in the Autumn we decided to layer the bulbs in pots. The idea is to use a large pot and nearest to the bottom plant tulips and grape hyacinths (usually April/May flowering). Cover with some compost then plant a layer of daffodils (for March /April). Add more compost then nearer to the top of the pot plant crocus (early Spring flowering).

By mid April the grape hyacinths and tulips were in flower, so the layered pots seem to have been a good idea although due to the un-seasonal  weather in both months the pots got very crowded

The borders began to show more colour in April - mainly from primulas, cowslips, ranunculus and perennial wallflowers.
